FAQ

What is fencing?

Fencing is a modern Olympic sport and martial art with a history spanning thousands of years. Originally developed for battlefield combat and duels of honor, fencing has evolved into a fast-paced sport that tests timing, strategy, and reflexes — many compare it to a real-life video game, with scoring lights that show when a fencer lands a hit.

At our St. Louis Fencing Club, we teach fencing as both an exciting sport and a discipline rooted in respect and tradition, giving students a unique way to build confidence and athletic skills.

Who can learn to fence?

Anyone can learn fencing! At St. Louis Fencing Club, we welcome kids, teens, and adults — from ages 10 to 45 and beyond. Whether you’re brand new or returning to the sport, our fencing classes are designed for all ages and skill levels.

Is fencing safe? Does it hurt?

Yes — fencing is one of the safest sports you can learn! At St. Louis Fencing Club, all fencers wear protective jackets, masks, and gloves, and the flexible blades are designed to bend on impact. This safety gear and equipment make fencing very safe and virtually pain-free, so students can focus on learning and having fun.

    Do I need equipment?

Not at all! At St. Louis Fencing Club, we provide all the fencing gear you need — jackets, masks, gloves, and weapons — so you can focus on learning and improving without buying anything upfront. When you’re ready, we’ll help you choose your own equipment if you wish.

What should I wear for classes?

For classes at St. Louis Fencing Club, we recommend wearing sweatpants or yoga pants, a comfortable t-shirt or workout top, and flat-soled tennis shoes. Please make sure your legs are covered — shorts are not recommended for safety and comfort.

Am I too old to start?

Not at all! At St. Louis Fencing Club, we have fencers of all ages — some starting for the first time in their 50s, 60s, or even 70s. Fencing is an individual sport that focuses on skill, strategy, and timing rather than pure strength or speed. It’s never too late to start and enjoy the challenge!

Can fencing get me into college?

While we can’t guarantee placement at an NCAA university, St. Louis Fencing Club trains athletes to compete at Division I and Division II levels. Our experienced coaches and strong network in the fencing community can help guide you through the college recruitment process and connect you with collegiate programs.

I know how to fence, what next?

If you already know how to fence and want a new challenge, St. Louis Fencing Club can help you take the next step. There are competitions for every age group — from Youth-8 to Veteran-80, and levels ranging from local tournaments to NCAA collegiate events, national championships, World Cups, and even the Olympic Games.

Competitive fencing is a fantastic way to meet new people, travel, and make lifelong memories with teammates and rivals who share your passion for the sport.
